When trying to make sense of the world around us, Gestalt psychology suggests that we do not simply focus on every small component. Instead, our minds tend to perceive objects as part of a greater whole and as elements of more complex systems. Gestalt psychology – an influential theory of perception early in the twentieth century – proposed that perception was determined not by the elemental sensations of light and dark but by laws of similarity, good continuation (analogous to smoothness), closure, symmetry, etc. that grouped such elements within a larger visual context (Figure 1). The premise of Gestalt psychology emphasizes that the whole of anything is greater than the sum of its parts, and attributes of the whole can't be deduced by analyzing any of the parts on their own.
